Fixed och Growth mindset är två olika definitioner utav tänkesätt som togs fram utav Carol S. Dweck. Dessa beskriver hon i boken Mindset: du blir vad du tänker. Hon anser att dessa två tänkesätt är varandras motsatser och till stor grad formar hur du är som person.

Personer med Fixed mindset anser att intelligens är något statiskt de föds med, och alltså inget de själva kan påverka. De tenderar till att undvika utmaningar och hålla sig till uppgifter de vet att de klarar av. Detta då de inte ser positivt på motgångar eller kan ta kritik. Detta gör att de inte tycker om konkurrens och tenderar att ge upp om saker och ting börjar bli lite jobbigt.

Personer med Growth mindset anser däremot att intelligens är något som kan utvecklas. Detta tänkesätt gör att de välkomnar utmaningar, tar vara på kritik och inte ger upp. De anstränger sig också mer och välkomnar konkurrens. Allt detta gör de då de anser att det leder till att de utvecklas som personer.

När barnen sedan fick lösa svårare pussel visade det sig att barnen som blev uppmuntrade till ett growth mindset ville lösa det svårare pusslet. De såg ansträngningen som krävdes för att lösa pusslet som något positivt. Barnen som däremot hade uppmuntrats till ett fixed mindset fick istället dåligt självförtroende då de inte hade lika lätt att lösa det svårare pusslet som det enklare.

När barnen sedan fick välja vilket pussel de ville fortsätta med valde därför barnen med fixed mindset att arbeta med det lättare pusslet medan barnen med Growth mindset valde att arbeta med det svårare pusslet.
